is a Senior Distinguished Fellow on the Executive Board of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP); he previously served as Political Director at the German Foreign Office and as Ambassador to China and Japan. Since 2014, he has held visiting professorships in California, Japan, at the Free University of Berlin (FU), and at the Hertie School in Berlin. In March 2026, WSPC published his latest book entitled Newspeak and Newthink: China’s »Rejuvenation« of Its Memory.
