is a social historian and emeritus professor of history at the Free University of Berlin. He was president of the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB) and editor of the journal Neue Gesellschaft-Frankfurter Hefte for many years. His recent publications include: Kampf um die Moderne: Das lange 19. Jahrhundert in Deutschland (The Battle for Modernity: The Long Nineteenth Century in Germany), published by Klett-Kotta in 2021.

is a professor of political science and sociology at the Institute of Higher Education for the Police and Public Administration in Cologne, North Rhine Westphalia. He was director of the Academy for Social Democracy and the Nordic Office of the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung. Currently, he serves on the SPD’s Committee on Basic Values.
